A couple of weeks ago I heard about the Trillion Trees Initiative. First announced at the 2020 The World Economic Forum during 2020, the One Trillion Tree Initiative connects funders with forest conservation organizations. It’s the target, hence the name is to re-grow, recover and conserve one trillion trees by 2050.

The mass planting of trees can introduce all sorts of invasive species.

Can Planting These Do More Harm Thank Good?

Planting a large number of trees while at surface level seems to improve the issue revolving around greenhouse gases and climate change may not be the best use of money and resources. Trees must live in harmony with the nature that surrounds them, however, the mass planting of trees can introduce all sorts of invasive species. These invasive species are living organisms brought into a new environment causing damage to their ecosystem. A Trillion Trees spread across the globe in new areas could very well damage already existing local species.

Instead, the most viable way to allow our forests to trap carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is to ensure that indigenous peoples rights to the forests that are often used by large corporations and governments are not stripped.
