The Artic National Wildlife Refuge, located in northeastern Alaska makes up the only portion of the North Coast not open to drilling. Yet this area is now in danger of being used to obtain oil and gas. This land is public but current administration is attempting to sell it to corporate businesses in January of 2021.

Implications

Dating thousands of years back and continuing on until today, the Gwich'in and Inupiat people have utilized the wildlife of the Arctic Refuge for clothing and food supply. The land is also a protected space for polar bears, caribou, countlesss species of birds and other animals to roam about. However, using this area for the production of oil and gas will threaten the animals that inhabit it, limit food available to Indigenous Americans and further the devastating effects of climate change.

What You Can Do

Its not too late yet, we have the power to speak up and prevent the auction of this land. Visit https://www.protectthearctic.org/take-action-to-protect-the-arctic-national-wildlife-refuge to take action. On this website you can submit a digital message that will then be passed on to the Fish and Wildlife Service on your behalf or you can send a physical letter. Please spread the word and ask those you know to join in fighting to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
