One common misconception about being environmentally friendly is that it all has to be “all or nothing.” However, an interesting concept that applies to so many things is also applicable to sustainable efforts. Many people looking to become more eco-friendly and help out the planet can often become intimidated by the pressure to not only care about the planet but also execute tasks in their daily life according to a list of strict guidelines. While ideally every individual trying to be as vigilant as possible is a good thing, this level of vigilance is situation dependent. Not everyone can afford to purchase the more expensive piece of clothing or car that takes a lower toll on the planet. It is important to recognize that everyone is in a different situation and that whether due to time, money or other constraints, many people cannot live a “zero waste” life. But what we all can promise to do is put in effort.

Underlying Guilt

While sometimes societal pressure can be good to encourage eco-friendly practices, it can also be overwhelming and can cause people to stop attempting to be sustainable altogether. Doing something is always better than nothing in the long run. Every once in a while try something new to continue incorporating increasing levels of sustainability in your life, but do not force it in a restraining way.
