Decades ago purchasing of clothing consisted of buying only when needed. However, the fashion industry has turned this infrequent event into a pastime. Shops often restocking inventory to fit the new trends, competing to have the most affordable clothing, and style crazes ending in the blink of an eye. While superficially this may seem like a positive thing, the throwing away and buying of new clothes happening at a rapid rate only has negative effects on the planet and people. Fast fashion is defined as inexpensive, up to date clothing that quickly comes into and out of selling in to converge costumer demand.

Recently I saw a widespread trendy clothing brand reach all social media apps. This brand, called Shein, at the time seemed like a jackpot of cheap and appealing clothing. I blindly visited the website and selected items into my cart. After recieving and wearing the garments I purchased, I began to start seeing articles and post about the negative environmental impact this brand had, while simultaneously my peers posted images of them wearing these items unaware or choosing to ignore its environmental effects.

After completing this research, I certainly aim to purchase clothing from sustainable brands and with less frequency and I encourage you to do as well.
